This glossary explains common pallet racking terms in simple language to help you plan your warehouse with confidence.
Pallet rack decking is installed between the beams to create a stable, level surface for storing pallets and loose products. It helps support the load, improves safety, and prevents items from falling between beams.
Several types of pallet rack decking are available, including wire decking, plywood decking, corrugated steel decking, and PunchDeck, with wire decking being the most commonly used option.
Pallet Rack Beams are often also referred to as:
Pallet Rack Supports
Pallet Rack Flooring
Pallet Rack Shelves
Pallet Rack Frames (Uprights)
Pallet Rack Beams (Crossbeams)
Pallet rack beams are the horizontal supports that connect the frames and hold the pallets. A standard rack bay uses two frames and four beams.
Pallets typically rest on two beams — one in the front and one in the back.
Common beam types include teardrop beams for bolt-free installation and structural beams for heavier-duty applications using nuts and bolts.
Pallet rack beams are also commonly called:
Pallet rack crossmembers
Pallet rack crossbars
Pallet rack arms
Pallet rack frames are the vertical supports that hold your pallet racking system together. Beams attach to the frames to create a storage section, also known as a bay or section.
By connecting multiple frames and beams, pallet racking can be arranged in long rows or configured in different layouts to fit your warehouse or storage space.
Pallet rack frames are also commonly called:
Pallet rack uprights
Pallet rack columns
Pallet rack posts
Pallet rack trees
